MUSIC WORLD: Who The F*ck is Trinidad James?

Being a blogger and all, I’m ashamed to say I was late to the Trinidad James hype. I had heard the song, “All Gold Everything” but never thought to explore who the artist was. Enter: Trinidad James.

Yup, that’s a real person. Trinidad James has claimed to have begun rapping no more than 10 months before “All Gold Everything” popped off. Despite that relatively short rapping career, he has generated enough buzz to warrant covers of his popular songs, more than 35 thousand YouTube views on his popular single, “All Gold Everything,” and a recent headlining show at Santos in New York City. But where the hell did he come from??

Trinidad James is an import from Atlanta who was born in Trinidad. His real name is Nicholas Williams. He has 11 brothers and sisters and they moved from Trinidad to New York City and then to Atlanta, Georgia. He has received endorsements from Atlanta artists include T.I., 2 Chainz, and Young Jeezy. Check his performance from his sold out show in New York this past December.

“All Gold Everything” is an experience in itself. From the video of him holding the cutest puppy ever, the velvet slippers and open red Versace-esque shirt, by the time he gets to “Popped a Molly, I’m sweating!” you’re already pulled in. If you’ve been under a rock and haven’t experienced the video to his breakout single yet, check it below.

His appearance is as entertaining as his music. The hair, the beard, the glasses, the gold, the open shirts, all of it plays into the image of Trinidad James. If you can look past all of that and press play on his mixtape, “Don’t Be S.A.F.E.,” if nothing else you will be entertained. My favorite track of the mixtape is “Females Welcomed” featuring Reija Lee. It starts off as hip-hop as Trinidad James is then the beat flips and surprises listeners. I love it. Check it below.

Lyrical genius? Not quite. Do I think he’s someone that we’ll be paying attention to? Definitely. But with room for all types of rap right now, he fits nicely into that feel-good-because-the-lyrics-are-entertaining lane that 2 Chainz most recently occupied. As a result of all the buzz though, Def Jam has signed a multi-million dollar contract with Trinidad James banking off the hype of one single.  But with a single like “All Gold Everything” and look so unique to him, who can blame them?
