MUSIC WORLD: Album Review: “New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh” + Full Album Download

Erykah Badu has released her newest album in the New Amerykah series much to the delight of many of her fans. New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh picks up where New Amerykah Part One: 4th World Order left off, in a way. The album presents the usual soulful and abstract sounds familiar to longtime fans of Erykah Badu.

The album opens with simply melodic “20 Feet Tall” produced by 9th Wonder. She performed the track live over the weekend. Peep the video below.

Erykah Badu‘s lyricism and creative freedom are apparent throughout the new album. The album is a mixture of acoustic sounds, jazz infused tracks, and personal tales of love and life. I do not want to over interpret because I feel like true is art is best enjoyed with a free mind. And this album is art.

About the album, Erykah Badu said:

I called it ‘Part II: The Return of the Ankh‘ because this album is the sister of the left side of my brain – it is the right side.’Part I was the left side of my thoughts – it was more socially political and my thought process was more analytical. This time there wasn’t anything to be concerned with – the album is more emotional and flowy and talks about feelings. It reminds of the days of ‘Baduizm’ – this is just about beats and rhymes in a cipher.

Standout tracks, upon first listen, include:

Window Seat:” the official first single coupled with a controversial video; beautiful song about longing for what’s missing in love (in my opinion), though it has been interpreted MANY different ways

Turn Me Away (Get Munny):” sampling “You Can’t Turn Me Away” most famously used by Junior Mafia; classic song about getting love back

You Loving Me (Session):” a short interlude of sorts shows Erykah Badu’s playfulness while sharing another type of love

Out My Mind, Just In Time:” 10+ minute track; Part 1: classic sound piano heavy track presenting love lost to someone else and everything she would do for love; Part 2: getting over the love lost and loving someone new

The entire 11 track album is a treat. It includes the bonus track “Jump Up in the Air and Stay There” featuring Bilal and Lil’ Wayne as well. If you haven’t seen the video to that track, peep it below.

The entire album is beautiful and soulful oozing emotions. There were rumors of track featuring Andre 3000. I wish it would have come to fruition. Maybe on Part 3… Until then, make sure you cop the new album, in stores March 30, 2010. If you can’t wait until then, click the link below to download the full album. Make sure you still buy the album for your car to support the industry 🙂
